New Commerce Bank branch @ corner of Marsh & Silverside Roads

The New Castle County Department of Land Use, Planning Division, has received a land development plan for land in Brandywine Hundred.  Specifically, the application is for the subdivision and development of the North side of Silverside Road, east side of Marsh Road. Minor Land Development Plan to combine two tax parcels and construct a 3,669 square foot bank with associated improvements, Commerce Bank, Marsh Road. CN Zoning. (App. #2007-0622-S)

It appears that Commerce Bank has decided to locate one of its new banks here in Brandywine Hundred. The bank intends to purchase the site of the now closed Eckerd's, which fronts on Marsh Road and the Royal Cleaners, which fronts on Silverside Road. The land is already zoned for commercial or office use; however, the Bank will have to comply with subdivision code and the process of reconstructing the site.  Additionally, there will be transportation and ingress/egress safety issues which I will monitor carefully in behalf of our community.

Please note that this application combines two parcels of land: the Royal Cleaners parcel and the defunct Eckerd's Drug store parcel.  You may recall that when Eckerd?s was functioning, there was great difficulty accessing the parcel from Silverside Road.

When I was zoning chair for the Council of Civic Organizations of Brandywine Hundred prior to my election as New Castle County Councilman, I had suggested strongly that both of these parcels be combined.  I am pleased to see that the subsequent owner of these two parcels is now moving in this positive direction.

I am well aware that in our highly-developed area even minor plans can have a significant impact on the neighborhood.  That is why I am taking the extra effort to notify you of the pending application.  I do believe it is important to advise individuals in the community of the development that is taking place.  I also believe that our laws always are subject to improvement and, as such, I value any input on issues from constituents such as you.

Information from the New Castle County website [www.nccde.org] is appended below. For updated information, contact the New Castle County Land Use Department (302-395-8362) or check the county website. I hope that this information is of interest and use to you.  If you have any questions, you can contact the Department of Land Use office at 302-395-5400 and ask to speak to someone who can answer questions about this plan.

"There was such a lack of oversight from the previous council. The only people who questioned anything were Chris Coons and Bob Weiner."
