Councilman Robert Weiner Invites Community to Meeting on County Safety Plan - News Journal
New Castle County residents are invited to a community meeting to discuss a five-year, multimillion-dollar proposal to beef up public safety by adding police officers, 911 personnel and support staff. The meeting will be at 6 p.m. Monday (10/27/08) at the Brandywine Hundred Library on Foulk Road. Councilman Robert Weiner is sponsoring the meeting. Council is set to vote Tuesday to authorize spending $1.7 million from the county's cash reserve to pay for the first year. Officials have said a 4 percent property tax increase would be needed each of the next four years to continue funding the plan. The proposal would add 16 employees to Emergency Communications, 95 patrol officers, 22 investigators and 12 support staff. Officials said adding the staff would help toward the goals of reducing overall crime and improving response time to low-priority calls. For more information, call Lou Hinkle at 395-8362.
