Councilman Weiner supports county advertising; Weiner will monitor rules promulgation to assure protection of the public - Community News
Are ads one step closer to county parkland? By Jesse Chadderdon Community News Posted Oct 29, 2009 @ 11:29 AM Wilmington, Del. — New Castle County Council unanimously voted to approve legislation authorizing the creation of guidelines to govern advertising on government property. It is considered the first step in a collaborative process between the administration, council and Ethics Commission to draft specific rules about what types of advertising would be solicited by the county and at what kind of facilities it would be allowed. Councilman Robert Weiner (R-Chatham) ultimately supported the bill after weeks of voicing concern that the county may not be able prohibit businesses like adult entertainment centers from advertising because of free speech laws. Assistant County Attorney Will Davis said sufficient case law gives governments discretion over the kind of businesses it sells advertising to.
