Councilman Bob Weiner sponsors top honors for World War II veterans - WDEL

County Council honors World War II veterans
By LeAnne Matlach, WDEL

After 70 years, three Merchant Marines are being honored for their heroism during World War II on the Chesapeake Bay.

WDEL's LeAnne Matlach has more.

New Castle County Council are the first, but probably not the last, to honor 3 Merchant Marines who demonstrated heroism on the Chesapeake Bay during World War II.

County Councilman Bob Weiner introduced the resolution to honor the 3 men who helped rescue crew members of a tug that had been attacked by a German U-boat near the Chesapeake.

For Weiner, honoring the men hits close to home.

Weiner says the merchant marines will be honored by Governor Markell later this week.

"I am grateful for Bob's decade-long support for the Washington-Rochambeau Revolutionary Route National Historic Trail, which follows Philadelphia Pike and Market Street into Wilmington. His presence and influence at the birth of our Delaware organization to develop this trail and to have it designated as a National Historic Trail was a key factor in keeping our hopes for the trail alive and growing."
